The North Queensland wet season brings humidity, mould, and mud like nowhere else. Here's how to stay ahead of it all — from entry points to bathroom grout.
Anyone who's lived through a Townsville wet season knows the drill: the humidity climbs, the mud tracks in from outside, and before long you're noticing mould in places you didn't expect it.
The good news? With the right habits in place, your home can stay fresh and clean all the way through to the dry season.
During the wet, your front and back doors become your home's biggest vulnerability. A good quality door mat — ideally two, one outside and one inside — will catch the worst of it. Wipe down door frames and surrounds weekly, as they collect splashed mud and moisture faster than you'd think.
In Townsville's humidity, mould can establish in as little as 24–48 hours. Check the following spots weekly during the wet:
A solution of white vinegar and tea tree oil is excellent for surface mould. For anything more established, it's worth calling in a professional before it spreads.
Ceiling fans are your best friend in the wet. Run them in reverse (clockwise from below) to push warm air down and keep air circulating. Open windows during dry spells to flush out stale, humid air.
Tile and polished concrete floors need more frequent mopping during the wet — tracked-in mud dries quickly and scratches surfaces. A microfibre mop with a simple water and eucalyptus oil solution is excellent for North Queensland homes.
A clean home in the wet season isn't about cleaning more — it's about cleaning smarter.
If your home is overdue for a post-wet-season reset, a deep clean is the most effective way to start the dry season fresh. We see the damage humidity does to kitchens and bathrooms every year — grout restoration alone can transform a bathroom.
